A registered sex-offender was
arrested Tuesday for allegedly raping a 10-year-old child inside a church.
Police
say that 65-year-old Henry Clifford Byrd Sr. had been invited to participate in
activities at New Bethel Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, Mass., on March 23,
WXII 12 reported.
According
to a police statement obtained by the station, "At some point during the
evening, it was discovered that Byrd had possibly sexually assaulted one of the
children at the church."
Police
believe the incident occurred in the church kitchen, according to WFMY News 2.
Byrd
has been charged with rape of a child and indecent liberties with a child.
Byrd
was convicted in May 2000 of three counts of indecent liberties with a child,
according to the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry. He was sentenced to
three years and eight months in prison, and got out of prison in 2006.
Dr.
Kendall Jones, the church's pastor, told WFMY that he did not know about Byrd's
criminal record.
