Cardinals
elected a new pope to lead the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics on Wednesday,
overcoming deep divisions to select the 266th pontiff in a remarkably fast
conclave.
Argentine
Jorge Bergoglio has been elected pope, the first ever from the Americas and the
first from outside Europe in more than a millennium. He chose the name Pope
Francis.
After
announcing `’Habemus Papum” – `’We have a pope!” – a cardinal standing on the
balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday revealed the identity of the new
pontiff, using his Latin name. Bergoglio had reportedly finished second in the
2005 conclave that produced Benedict XVI – who last month became the first pope
to resign in 600 years.
The
76-year-old archbishop of Buenos Aires has spent nearly his entire career at
home in Argentina, overseeing churches and shoe-leather priests.
The winner
of the election must receive 77 votes, or two-thirds of the 115, to be named
pope.
Benedict was
elected on the fourth ballot in 2005 – but he was the clear front-runner going
into the vote. Pope John Paul II was elected on the eighth ballot in 1978 to
become the first non-Italian pope in 455 years.
St. Malachy
in the other post was wrong, He predicted a Petrus Romanus and not a Bergoglio,
but that doesn’t mean we should live carelessly because the bible says no one
knows when the trumpets will sound.
