Tyler Perry claims he’s a Christian
and his films are appreciated by his Christian audience. But the recent box
office flop, Peeples, written and directed by Tina Gordon Chism,
endorsed by Perry, glorified a homosexual couple–a departure for him.
Though not seen by many moviegoers who typically support
Perry’s films–It grossed a paltry $4.8 million on opening weekend, not even
recouping the $15 million it cost to make and market it–some faith viewers who
did check it out, were thrown off by the portrayal of an amorous relationship
between two women.
Gloria, played by Kali Hawk, is depicted as a cable news reporter in a committed, loving relationship
with her camerawoman Meg played by Kimrie Lewis-Davis
With rather flat, boring storyline, with a few scattered
laughs at best, the Kerry Washington-led Peeples struggled to find
its voice for the most part. The exception was the pointed message that gay
couples should be viewed and accepted, just like any other couple.
